This collection was the beginning of Melancholy Music for Children: music written as an alternative to more conventional children's piano repertoire. It is intended to be easy to access, easy to share, and available without payment.

Connection to the screenplay
The music eventually inspired the screenplay.
The screenplay came later, growing out of the emotional world first established by the music. Even on its own, the scorebook is the original source of that atmosphere.
